MUHANGA- District officials, on Tuesday, commissioned the first set of classrooms meant for the 12-Year Basic Education programme at Groupe Scolaire Nyarusange in Nyarusange Sector, Muhanga District.

More than 70 other classrooms along with 144 toilet units, are presently under construction in various schools in the district, and are due for completion later this month ahead of the start of the next academic year.

Parents who spoke to The New Times said that it would reduce the cost of sending children to distant areas for high school education.

"Having a school nearby will also make it easier for parents to monitor their children’s performance,” Specioza Mukankubana, a parent, commented.

The Executive Secretary of the sector, Beatrice Uwamariya, attributed the achievements to the commitment of residents who contributed both funds and manpower.

"They exhibited a high level of commitment towards the successful completion of the project,” Uwamariya noted.

The Vice Mayor, Francios Uhagaze, who officiated at the inauguration, called on the local community to contribute towards the maintenance of the new classroom blocks and promote education in the area.

The sector rewarded various people and cooperatives that contributed to the successful construction of the classrooms.

Construction work is currently ongoing in Rugendabari, Kibangu, Kiyumba, Mushishiro and Kabacuzi sectors, according to Valérien Hakizimana, the district Education Officer.
