KARONGI – Two people in Karongi district are in Police custody after they were found in possession of counterfeit notes amounting to Rwf 60,000.

The duo, identified as Marrie Nyiranzabamwita and Venant Byiringiro, were arrested as they attempted to pay transport fare on a Karongi bound bus from Rusizi. It is one of the bus conductors who discovered the fake money.

"The conductor who discovered the counterfeit note immediately tore it and there ensued prolonged arguments which drew other passengers ire,” Jean Marie Vianney Ntakirutimana, one of the passengers recounted.

Upon thorough search, the suspects were found in possession of more fake currency.  As they wait to be charged, the two argued that they picked the money at a bus stage.

"I attempted to use the money because I did not know that it was counterfeit,” Byiringiro pleaded.

The duo will appear before court this week and could face up to 2 years each in if convicted of forging the  national currency.
