Editor,

I recently visited a family in Nyagatare District but I was left upset after I realized that the family had engaged the services of a very young girl as the house help.

Law N° 27/2001 of April, 28, 2001, relating to the rights and protection of the child against violence under Article 22 states that, "necessary administrative, legal measures and those concerning social welfare and education must be taken in order to reinforce protection of the child against any kind of violence, psychological or physical brutality, abandonment, neglect, mistreatment, or exploitation.”

Rwanda has put in place several laws that protect the rights of children which must be enforced. The Ministry of Gender and Family Promotion (MIGEPROF) should conduct a survey especially in Kigali to grasp the magnitude of the issue before and take action, including empowering children to break the silence and speak out against any form of violence inflicted on them.
