Noisy Gasabo bars to close early

BAR and restaurant owners operating in the residential areas of Gasabo district may have to restrict their hours of operation if they are to retain permission to operate. 

One pub owner, who preferred anonymity, said he among entertainment joint owners who were invited to meeting by Gasabo district officials who informed them that those found open after 11 p.m., will be fined Rwf 20,000 and suspended for three days.

"We were called for a meeting at the district and they informed us of the directive,” he said.

"They didn’t consult us before taking this decision. Currently, we are waiting for the minutes of the advisory council of the district regarding the matter.”

When contacted, the Mayor of Gasabo District, Willy Ndizeye told The New Times; "There is o directive like that! Only those specific cases that cause insecurity to the neighborhood!”

A few months ago, Papyrus, a popular nightspot in the upscale residential area in Kimihurura Sector was closed down due to what officials termed as excessive noise pollution and poor parking management.
