Stage 4 (Today)

Kigali-Rubavu -151km

ADRIEN Niyonshuti stayed within touching distance of race leader Kiel Reijnen after a third spot finish in yesterday’s third stage of the on-going Tour of Rwanda.

The two-time champion, who is riding for his South African club MTN Qhubeka, was two seconds shy of first place after clocking 2 hours, four minutes and 59 seconds in the 86km stage which started in Rwamagana and ended in Kicukiro, Kigali.

Reijnen, who is riding for USA’s Team Type 1, kept his perfect start intact after sealing his third consecutive stage win.

Having swept the opening prologue 4km stage on Sunday, the American claimed the second and third stages.

After stage three, Niyonshuti has accumulated about Euros 1030 (approx. Rwf0.8m) after emerging as the best mountain climber and top Rwandan rider.

For every stage, the top Rwandan rider and best mountain climber pocket Euros 240 respectively.

Overall, Reijnen tops the charts with 3 hours, 21 minutes and 13 seconds followed by Niyonshuti (3 hours, 21 minutes and 29 seconds) and his MTN Qhubeka Dylan Girdlestone (3 hours, 21 minutes and 35 seconds).

Nicodem Habiyambere and Gasore Hategeka, who are riding for Team Rwanda (Karisimbi), are 7th and 10th respectively.

Other local riders in the top 20 include Obed Ruvogera (Akagera), Emmanuel Rudahunga (Karisimbi), Nathan Byukusenge (Karisimbi), Joseph Biziyaremye (Akagera) and Abraham Ruhumuriza (Karisimbi).

The Tour continues this morning when riders head to Rubavu covering a distance of 151km (stage four).

This year’s edition has attracted 55 riders.
