By summoning 193 officials from both central government and public authorities to explain their role in the loss of public funds as pinpointed in 2009/10 Auditor General’s report, the Public Service Committee (PSC) has set a milestone.

We cannot talk about fighting graft without questioning those in charge of safeguarding public funds. Every year, the AG ‘s report discloses irregularities in the government expenditure, especially through tender processes.

We have in place laws against corruption that should be enforced forthwith to ensure accountability. I am not apportioning blame yet as everybody is innocent until proven guilty. However, there are instances where some officials commit unlawful acts but remain in the same positions.

The 2009/10 AG’s report indicates that about Rwf 9.7 was unaccounted for. This money is enough to construct public infrastructure like classrooms and health centers.
