Editor,

With its proven track record in delivery of basic social services, the church has a critical role to play in sustainable and equitable development of any country. Apart from teaching their flock the word of God or morals, churches should also focus on developmental activities.

You cannot tell people to turn to God when they are hungry. It is, therefore, praiseworthy to hear clerics agree to direct their activities towards social and economic development in communities alongside spiritual growth of their followers.

Churches should teach their followers ways to overcome poverty which should be in line with the government’s developmental programmes.
