Allow me to express my views on the article that was published in yesterday’s issue of The New Times, regarding the move by government to accord more authority to the Office of the Auditor General.

The initiative is expected to make the office more autonomous both in managing internal affairs and in its audit responsibilities, according to a new bill that is under consideration in the Chamber of Deputies.

My guess is that there are genuine reasons why those behind the move are pushing for a more empowered Auditor General, and it will help the latter do a much better job in terms of exposing embezzlement cases in public offices – although I have no issue with what the office has been doing.

In most cases, powerful officials will try to use their power to ward off anybody who seeks to scrutinise their work, which is why I believe that the proposed legislation will give the AG all the freedom and versatility to deliver on his taxing mandate.
