KARONGI- Two staff members of Kibuye Hospital, Karongi District, are in police custody for allegedly misappropriating a total of Rwf 24 million.

Innocent Sevumba, and Dominique Nzanana, the administrative officer and accountant, respectively, were apprehended following an audit conducted by district authorities between 2008 and 2010.

Yesterday, the District Executive Secretary, Yves Ningabire, told The New Times that the audit unveiled extra expenditure without support documents resulting into suspicions of fraud.

"The scam was discovered during our audit of public institutions in the district. We handed over the audit report to police and that’s when the decision to arrest the officials was taken,” Ningabire said.

Though he could not readily divulge more details about the report, an inside source revealed that the decision was also recommended by the District Advisory Council.

"After compiling the report, it was approved by the advisory council before the arrests were executed,” the source said.
