Kenyan varsity to build US$150m campus

After acquiring land in Gatenga Sector, Kicukiro District, Mt. Kenya University will next month start construction of its main campus estimated to cost about US$156m (approx Rwf90bn).

The University`s Rector, Prof. Musa O. Nyakora, said the facility will comprise of a hotel and hostel among others.

"We shall have a fully equipped laboratory to cater for various programmes, including pharmaceutical, medical laboratory and nursing as well as the school of health science and pure and applied sciences,” Nyakora said.

The Rector disclosed this to The New Times shortly after a media briefing on preparations to celebrate one year since the institution opened its doors in the country.

The event, that is scheduled for this Friday, will also see the university hold its first beauty contest.

The Deputy Principal, Juuko Erias, said that the university has reasons to celebrate.

"Apart from the courses we started with, we have managed to come up with others like Masters in Business, Public Health and International Executive Masters in Business Administration (IEMBA) among others,” he pointed out.  

Juuko explained that the school has also embarked on strategies to contribute towards attaining media professionalism.

"We want to play a significant role developing the media, hence the reason we have also introduced media programmes, including diploma and bachelors in journalism,” he said.

Currently, Mt Kenya University has a total of 1,200 registered students.
