NYAGATARE – Cases of rape, defilement and assault are reportedly topping the list of crimes recorded in Nyagatare District in the last three months.

The disclosure was made by district police authorities during a general security meeting held Tuesday.

According to police statistics, 27 cases of rape, defilement and assault were registered between September and November.

Other crimes registered in the district include robbery, with 22 cases and drug trafficking, which registered 14 cases.

The meeting which, was attended by local leaders from the Cell level, and chaired by the Mayor, Fred Atuhe Sabbiti, regretted the growing number of accidents and warned motorists, especially taxi motorcycle operators, against reckless driving.

"We always work hard to ensure that there are no accidents that may claim lives…but it is very shocking that, within only a period of three months, the district has lost five people in road accidents. Strong measures should be put in place to reverse the trend,” said the District Police Commander, Eric Mutsinzi.

Some sectors like Karangazi, Rukomo, Rwimiyaga and Katabagemu were particularly singled out for lack of vigilance against crimes.

Sabbiti called for concerted efforts to fight crimes and other obstacles to development.
