KARONGI- Upcountry residents say credit and savings cooperatives

(SACCO) have significantly helped them to improve their economic and social welfare.

Andrea Mugabo, a resident of Rugabano Sector in Karongi District, told The New Times that his family’s welfare has greatly improved after he started saving through a locally based sacco.

"Previously, I was not able to realise how important it is to join savings cooperatives. The difference now is that I can even acquire a loan so as to further improve the welfare of my family,” he said.

The father of three stressed that he is in position to start up a private business as his savings have drastically increased.

Available figures indicate that in Karongi and Rutsiro districts, savings from the local population exceeded Rwf100million with higher targets ahead.

"We expect to carryout extra mobilisation drives so as to create more awareness about the savings culture,” said Karongi district mayor, Bernard Kayumba.

During a function to celebrate the achievements of saccos in the district last Thursday, an official from the Ministry of Infrastructure, Jean de Dieu Hakizimana, promised more housing and financial support.
