Byabarumwanzi elected chair of the House committee on Genocide

Hon. Francois Byabarumwanzi was on Wednesday unanimously elected chairperson of the lower chamber’s standing committee on National Unity, Human Rights and the fight against Genocide. He replaces its former head, Evariste Kalisa, who was recently elected deputy Speaker.

Hon. Francois Byabarumwanzi was on Wednesday unanimously elected chairperson of the lower chamber’s standing committee on National Unity, Human Rights and the fight against Genocide.

He replaces its former head, Evariste Kalisa, who was recently elected deputy Speaker.

Byabarumwanzi, a former journalist, said yesterday that it was an important assignment to him because it is responsible for very crucial aspects – national unity, human rights and fighting Genocide.

The committee deals with issues relating to harmonization of Rwandan laws and international conventions on human rights ratified by the country, except those that fall under the responsibilities of other committees.

The MP said he is ready to handle his new assignment especially because of his background.

Previously, he was a member of the standing committee on political affairs and gender, where he says he gained experience. Earlier, he headed the House’s special petitions committee.

Between 1990 and 1994, Byabarumwanzi, who holds a Masters Degree in Journalism from France, was involved in the human rights field.of House committee on Genocide
