BlackBerry users in the country will now enjoy video streaming services at a fee.

Blackberry users in Rwanda can now access online videos on their handsets but at a fee of Rwf 30 per megabyte.

The development follows concerns raised by users claiming that they could not enjoy the full benefits of their smart phone devices.

Some of the features that have been inaccessible to BlackBerry users in Rwanda include streaming videos online, flash players and AppWorld that gives subscribers access to several applications and downloads.

A statement from MTN Rwanda states that the streaming service should work on all blackberry handsets fitted with the BlackBerry device software 5.0 and above.

So far, there are about 5,000 BlackBerry users subscribed with the local provider of BlackBerry services, MTN Rwanda.

"If a Blackberry subscriber wishes to view a video on YouTube or any other application, they will incur an extra charge (Rwf 30per Mb),” reads the statement.

The statement adds that, all prepaid BlackBerry customers by default have Access Point Name (APN 11) configured on their profiles, therefore, they should be able to stream videos.

"If a postpaid customer wishes to have video streaming, they should formally request for it at the service centres and be informed that extra charges will be incurred when streaming, both in Rwanda and outside Rwanda.”

According to MTN, such users will have to sign a special form for the particular service.

The video streaming can be accessed when roaming and current roaming data charges apply.
