Heavy rains wreck havoc in Gatsibo

GATSIBO – Heavy rains characterised by strong winds on Monday evening destroyed houses and crops in several sectors of Gatsibo District. By Tuesday morning, authorities in the district provisionally announced that in Ngarama Sector alone, 26 houses, three churches, banana and maize plantations had been destroyed . Other sectors believed to have been affected by the heavy downpour are Gatsibo, Kabarore and Gitoki.

GATSIBO – Heavy rains characterised by strong winds on Monday evening destroyed houses and crops in several sectors of Gatsibo District.

By Tuesday morning, authorities in the district provisionally announced that in Ngarama Sector alone, 26 houses, three churches, banana and maize plantations had been destroyed .

Other sectors believed to have been affected by the heavy downpour are Gatsibo, Kabarore and Gitoki.

Scores of victims immediately sought refuge at unaffected neighbouring houses as the district authorities look for relief support.

Speaking to The New Times, the District Vice Mayor in charge of Social Affairs, Esperance Uwimpuhwe, said that they were still carrying out an assessment to ascertain the exact number of houses and other properties destroyed.

"We cannot provide the exact figures right now but we are in the field and will soon provide full numbers of property destroyed,” she said.

Gatsibo District has, in recent days, experienced severe rains that destroyed houses and hundreds of hectares of farmland.
