KAYONZA – Residents of Murundi Sector are living in fear after two hippos invaded a number of villages killing one man, Stephen Rwembeho reports.

Alphonse Hitimana, 48, a resident of Gakoma village, Buhabwa Cell in Murundi Sector, was attacked and instantly killed by two hippos that had strayed from the nearby Akagera National Park.

The mangled body of the villager was recovered in bushes by a herdsman. Akagera Park authorities helped the family of the deceased in meeting the Rwf 200,000 burial expenses.

Police said that the two hippos were later shot dead to avoid any more fatalities.

Stray animals continue to be a menace to people bordering the park, with the construction of a protective electrical fence around it going at a sluggish pace.
