GISAGARA-A veterinary officer in Gisagara District has been arrested in connection with the death of his wife at the weekend.

Jean Baptiste Uwayo of Duwane Cell, Kibilizi Sector, has according to police, confessed to having killed his wife, Beata Urayeneza, last Saturday.

Urayeneza, a mother to four-months-old twins, was pierced in the chest with a spear. Uwayo, who is also a poultry farmer, was arrested on Sunday.

According to police sources, Uwayo has given contradictory accounts of how his wife died.

Immediately after the arrest, he claimed that Urayeneza was killed by thieves who wanted to steal his chickens. He, however, retracted this account after police found a spear drenched in blood in his house. He then claimed that he had accidentally killed his wife "after mistaking her for robbers.”

The Sector’s Executive Secretary, Jean Paul Kimonyo, confirmed the incident.

"Uwayo has confessed to killing his wife but he is giving contradictory accounts on how the homicide was committed,” he said.

Investigations into the matter are still going on to determine the real cause of the death.

"We were surprised by what happened. Both the woman and her husband were well-to-do, and were not on the list of families which had problems in our neighbourhood,” said the official.

Some area residents attributed the death to domestic wrangles.
