KAYONZA- A truck driver, transporting marijuana, was arrested after he allegedly attempted to bribe a police officer along the Kayonza-Kigali highway, yesterday.

The driver, Theophire Mbanzabugabo, is said to have offered an officer Rwf 2,000 at a police check point in Kabarondo for his vehicle to be released without being searched.

Police discovered two sacks of marijuana after searching the vehicle.

The driver and his passenger, Noel Nshimiyimana, were promptly arrested.

Supt Theos Badege, the Police Spokesman, told The New Times that the incident should act as warning to drivers and the general public.

"The message is very clear, if the police can’t accept bribes, then it won’t be difficult to fight corruption,” he said, adding that the suspects would also be charged with trafficking in drugs.
