Bad breath is caused by odor-producing bacteria that grow in the mouth. When you don’t brush regularly, bacteria accumulate on the bits of food left in your mouth and between your teeth. The sulfur compounds released by these bacteria make your mouth smell.

Also certain foods, especially those prepared with garlic and onions and those that contain spicy oils, can contribute to bad breath. These oils are carried to your lungs and out through your mouth. Smoking is also a major cause of bad breath.

The truth is that most teens only brush their teeth for 30 to 45 seconds, which just doesn’t help. To sufficiently clean all the surfaces of your teeth, you should brush for at least two minutes at least twice a day.

Additionally, it is important to visit the dentist twice a year. Besides checking for signs of cavities or gum disease, the dentist will help keep your teeth extra clean. Take extra caution with what you eat and drink and remember the plaque on your teeth, is only waiting for that sugar to arrive. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables and drink water instead of soda. And don’t forget to smile!
