Editor,

I read with keen interest Eric Kabeera’s article in yesterday’s issue The New Times, titled "World Food Day to focus on productivity and prices.”

As the country celebrates World Food Day, I offer my best wishes to Dr. Agnes Kalibata, Hon. Minister of Agriculture and Animal Resources, Government of Rwanda and her team, for their pioneering work and initiatives in making this great nation food secure.

The celebrations in Musanze District have very rightly focused on good farm prices and increased productivity.

It is laudable to note that the Ministry of Agriculture always looks at innovative ways of enhancing productivity, by the setting up effective irrigation systems, like the one I saw during my recent visit to the country and which is now under construction in Nyagatare, Eastern Province.

Josette Sheeran , Executive Director, World Food Programme ( WFP ) also needs to be praised for partnering with the Ministry of Agriculture to make World Food Day in Rwanda not just another event , but one which will create great awareness for their main goal, which is , ‘ food for all .’

WFP’s initiatives of providing 350,000 pupils with meals in 300 primary schools, food assistance to Congolese refugees and many other programmes are all commendable.
