RWANDA leapfrogged Benin and Burundi to finish second in Group H after yesterday’s shocking 1-0 away win in Porto Novo.
Police striker and last season’s primus league top scorer Meddie Kagere got his international career off to a perfect start with the only goal of the match.
The 24-year-old, who started ahead of AS Cannes striker Elias Uzamukunda, got the winner on the 6th minute; something which looked next to impossible bearing in mind that the wasps had succumbed to a 3-0 defeat in the first leg which was held at Amahoro Stadium.
Ivory Coast, meanwhile, rounded up their campaign with a 100 per cent record, making it six wins out of six with a 2-1 win over Burundi in Abidjan.
Kolo Toure put the Elephants in front on 77 minutes, before Burundi’s Dugarry Nolabashinze equalised eight minutes later.
Yaya Toure then grabbed all three points with a late winner for the Ivorians in injury time.Ivory Coast maintained their unbeaten record with a comfortable 2-1 win over Burundi.
Ivory Coast finished top with 18points, Rwanda came second with six points while Burundi and Benin finished joint fourth with four points.
Amavubi stand-in-coach coach Eric Nshimiyimana is now certain to use the win as a bargaining chip for the job on a permanent basis.
23 coaches are vying for the post, with a new coach expected to be named before the start of the 2014 World Cup qualifiers next month.
Elsewhere, the East African region will not be represented in next year’s Nations Cup after Saturday’s goalless draw between Uganda and Kenya.
With Angola beating Guinea 2-0, Uganda needed to win against Kenya Harambee Stars to qualify but the draw meant that they finished a point adrift of Angola (12 points).
