NYAGATARE – A 47-year-old man was, last week, killed in Mimuli Sector, Nyagatare District over what bewildered residents believed was a longstanding land dispute.

Police identified the deceased only as Damascene, a resident of Nyagahita village, Gakoma cell.

According to Police, the deceased was murdered, using a machete, by Vianney Murasandonyi, who is still on the run.

"He disappeared immediately after committing the crime. We are still hunting him down but we assure residents he will be arrested and brought to justice,” vowed a police officer at Nyagatare Police Post.

Area residents told The New Times that the suspect had protracted wrangles with the deceased which they believe could have led to the murder.

"They once fought over land wrangles. Local leaders intervened and reconciled them. But we were shocked by the news that the suspect still had this horrible plan in mind,” said Saad Bigirimana, an area resident.
