Teachers in Musanze and Nyabihu districts are calling for Civic education to be included in school curriculums.

"Civic education should be allocated time like other subjects,’’ said Jean Pierre, Kamanzi, a teacher in the area.

Kamanzi, made the remarks during the closure of a workshop on civic education attended by over 130 political science teachers from secondary schools in the two districts, Wednesday.

During the three-day training, participants were briefed on civic education values, unity and reconciliation and conflict management.

The teachers were asked to prepare training manuals for students on the education of civic values, and carry out research on ways of promoting peace and harmony among students.

They were also asked to facilitate students’ unity and reconciliation clubs.

The training which was organised by the National Unity and Reconciliation Commission, NURC, targets teachers in all schools.

Sarah Bawaya, the head of Syllabus Development and Training at NURC, said that teachers should be role models in championing tolerance and harmony in society.

"Teachers should play a big role in teaching the youth the values expected of Rwandans. They have to combat genocide and divisionism, listen to students problems, and help them to deal with problems,’’ Bawaya said.

The training, which started in Rubavu and Ngororero districts, focused on the role of teachers in promoting civic education and values.
