Editor,

The one Cow Per Poor Household Programme that was introduced in 2008 is making a a big difference among the less privileged.

Although the programme was initially criticised, the reality on the ground shows that it is having a big impact in changing the lives of rural populations.

The government’s major objective of poverty alleviation and improving nutrition among families has largely been achieved.

I recently visited my family in Nyagatare and realised that most of the beneficiaries of the Girinka programme are appreciative. It is evident that many of the poor families that obtained the cow have managed to provide themselves with basic necessities and even sent their children to school.
