GASABO - In a bid to increase awareness about HIV prevention amongst the youth, parents have been urged to freely discuss the scourge and its effects with their children.

The call was made by Aphrodisiac Ndagijimana., the president of Amahoro Association- an umbrella of about 1,500 youth living with the virus.

He made the remarks while addressing parents in Bumbogo Sector, Gasabo District, where the association has about 226 members.

"The increase simply means more youth are being infected. This needs urgent attention not only by the government and NGO`s, but everyone since the country`s future lies in the hands of the young generation,” Ndagijimana said.

Some of the parents who spoke to The New Times conceded that although some had shown commitment; it was time for more to get on board so that they all work together in sensitising against the epidemic.

"There is a feeling amongst some parents that their children are still young and therefore cannot get involved in practices that can lead to contracting HIV,” said Edison Nuwagaba, one of the parents.
