Varsities to elect Senate representatives today

KIGALI - Elections for representatives of private and public universities and other institutions of higher learning are scheduled to take place today.

Speaking to The New Times yesterday, the Executive Secretary of the National Electoral Commission (NEC), Charles Munyaneza, said that the voting exercise will start at 6 a.m., and end at 3 p.m.

"All the voting materials are already at our offices countrywide and after voting for provincial representatives, we shall immediately begin to distribute ballot boxes and other equipment at the polling stations,” Munyaneza said.

He pointed out that according to the electoral law, the voting exercise should begin when two-thirds (2/3) of the total number of the electorate is present.

Electorate for the university representatives will be composed of all permanent lecturers who are Rwandan nationals.

Two candidates will sail through, one each from public and private institutions of higher learning.

"The campaigns went on smoothly and we are happy that no one violated the law; all the candidates adhered to the rules and regulations,” Munyaneza said.

According to the official, each university around Kigali city will have its own polling station.
