KARONGI- Residents in the Western Province are excited about the prospects of a new campaign, at the house hold level, to promote family wellbeing and economic development.

During last Saturday’s communal work (Umuganda), most residents admitted that the framework of the campaign would certainly enable them to improve their living conditions.

"This program helps to establish initiatives to guide our families in striving for development,” Theogene Musabyimana, a father of four said.

He noted that once the performance contracts are fully in place at the household level, individuals would be more accountable.

Speaking after the communal work, MP Landrada Umuraza told the residents that nation building begins with the family.

"The positive development of the nation starts with your families. You therefore have a major role to play in the country’s progress,” she said.

Umuraza urged the public, especially parents to promote children’s rights by sending kids to school, providing medical insurance and other essential necessities.

Karongi District Mayor, Bernard Kayumba, reminded the residents of the need to internally find solutions to their own problems.

"It is vital to search, within ourselves, the solutions to our problems. No stranger will help us do this,” he said.

The performance contract approach aims at planning and finding solutions towards the achievement of development goals, right from the community level.

It emulates leaders’ performance contracts-Imihigo, an evaluation design aimed at helping local authorities to plan and act accordingly.

In this new approach, every family will be asked to make pledges on basis of its own capacity and on plans proposed by the Umudugudu (village) authorities.
