KIGALI - The management of the suspended Weekly Post newspaper has filed a lawsuit at the High Court against the government, it has said.

The paper’s license was revoked in June by Information Minister, Prof. Laurent Nkusi, after its first edition.

"The Weekly Post wants the High Court to overturn what they consider an illegal decision by the Information Minister and issue an injunction allowing it to re-publish,” reads a release signed by the paper’s Editor-In-Chief Sulah Nuwamanya, and two other staff.

They are also seeking a court order for the ‘damages caused as a result of their abrupt and illegal closure.’

However, according to the chief registrar of the High Court, Olivier Rukundakuvuga, the court had not received any petition from the paper.

"I have also heard about it but when I went through all the cases that have been filed at the court, I couldn’t find that particular petition. Maybe they are planning to do so but at moment we don’t have it,” he said yesterday.Ends
