Editor,

THIS letter is in reference to your article in yesterday’s issue of The New Times titled "Peace Day celebrations to focus on day’s significance.”

Rwanda gives the world a glowing example of  "peace” . Dr. Jean Baptiste Habyalimana, Executive Secretary, National Unity and Reconciliation Commission, (NURC) and his team, need to be applauded for their great efforts in promoting peace and harmony not only in Rwanda, but in the region also.

The 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi left the country totally devastated.  But as Habyalimana rightly said, it was the  commitment of the Government of Rwanda that was able to instill in the minds of people that it was only through peace and harmony that this great nation could be rebuilt .

I am reminded of what the great Mahatma Gandhi, Father of the Indian Nation once said; "An eye for an eye will make the whole world blind.”

Through peaceful means, India gained freedom and Rwanda, too, through peaceful means has become what she is today - a country to reckon with! Wishing all Rwandans the very best on International Peace Day.
