AMAVUBI players are scheduled to start residential training this Sunday ahead of their final 2012 Africa Nations Cup qualifier against Benin.
The away Group H qualifier will be played on October 9 in Porto Novo and wasps’ interim coach Eric Nshimiyimana insists that much as qualification is already out of the question, the team will still play for a win.
"We have had a rough qualifying campaign but the rebuilding process starts with this game so we shall do everything to try and win,” Nshimiyimana said.
Rwanda’s qualification hopes were crushed after a humiliating 5-0 home defeat against Ivory Coast early this month.
On the day, Chelsea midfielder Solomon Kalou opened the floodgates with an easy tap-in on the 34th minute. Vitesse Arnhem’s striker Bony Wilfred then added a quick brace on the 40th and 42nd minute.
Second half substitute Yakonan Didier scored the fourth on the 64th minute before a fantastic goal from Arsenal’s Gervinho rounded off things.
The result did not only end Amavubi’s qualification hopes but also provoked Sellas Tetteh into quitting his job.
It was the fourth biggest defeat in Rwanda’s football history. Other big defeats include 1976’s 5-0 defeat against Cameroon, 1983’s 5-0 loss to Tunisia and 1999’s 5-0 loss against Uganda.
