MUHANGA-Police in Nyamabuye, Muhanga District, last Sunday arrested two women suspected of dumping their newly born babies in Kibangu and Kabacuzi sectors respectively.

One of the suspects, Marie Nyiranseke, a resident of Kabacuzi, is accused of aiding her daughter – Domitila Uwimana, 20, to carry out an abortion and throwing the infant into a pit latrine where it died.

Residents later retrieved the body and took it to Buramba health centre while Uwimana was taken to Kabgayi hospital for medical attention, security officials said.

Local residents alleged that Uwimana has had mental disturbances. "She has been mentally unstable. However it is sad that she had to commit such a crime,” a resident said.

Meanwhile, on the same day, another body of a newly born female baby was found floating in Nyabarongo River in Kibangu Sector in the Northern stretch of Muhanga District.

Local leaders who buried the body said the child was about three days old.  One female suspect has been netted in connection with the death by the police.
