The driver of the trailer that slammed into the house was unhurt, but his co-driver was seriously injured and is undergoing medical treatment at Rwamagana Hospital.

The driver of the second trailer abandoned it in the middle of the road and fled, Police said, as the search for the owner continues.

Eyewitnesses said the accident happened at around 10 p.m., when the trailers crashed with one smashing into trees before crashing into the house.

An area resident, Jean de Diue Gakwerere, told The New Times that the accident was shocking.

"We were having a drink when we had a huge bang. We went out only to see a trailer in the middle of the road and another smashed into a house ,” he said.

Verena Mukamurara, 50, her three children and a house-help were asleep, when they were awaken by the heavy bang, which shook the whole house and destroyed it.

She appealed for immediate assistance to shelter her children."We have nowhere to sleep…we need help,” she appealed.
