DESPITE all the hype surrounding APR, the army side’s head coach Ernie Brandts expects stiff competition from rival clubs Rayon Sport and Police in the new Primus League which kicks off this afternoon.

"It would be silly to rule out Rayon and Police in the title race because they have brought in very good players,” the Dutch tactician said.

APR open their title defense against new league boys Espoir at Kigali Regional Stadium. After lifting last week’s pre-season Primus Cup, fans expect nothing short of a great start today.

"We don’t know much about them (Espoir) but we are not taking them lightly. They are a top flight club and will punish us if we don’t take them serious,”

Many APR fans are eager to have another glimpse at the team’s new signings in Olivier Karekezi, Dan Wagaluka, Habib Kavuma, Papy Faty and Selemani Ndikumana.

Kiyovu are also in action against Nyanza, Police entertain Amagaju at Kicukiro while Mukura host Etincelles at Kamena stadium.

Yesterday, SC Kiyovu and Mukura were struggling to raise complete squads following shrewd orders from the Ministry of Sports, Youth and Culture, not to field any of the U-17 national team (Junior Wasps) players who featured in this year’s Fifa U-17 World Cup in Mexico.

For SC Kiyovu coach Jean Baptista Kayiranga, this is a distraction his team cannot afford.

"The timing was not right and we have not had time to fill up spaces left behind by the junior wasps,” a disappointed Kayiranga said.

Tomorrow, two games are on cards. La Jeunesse play Marines at Mumena before what should be a hotly contested tie between AS Kigali and Rayon Sport at Kigali Regional Stadium.
