Editor,

There have recently been reports about residents in various parts of the country displaced by heavy rains.

First, it was in Gatsibo District, particularly in Ngarama Sector, where 29 houses were destroyed by heavy rains and strong winds.

And, on Monday, over 50 families were left homeless after their houses were destroyed by heavy rains in Rubavu District.

These reports are likely to increase as unexpected rains show no signs of abating.  I wonder whether there has been any communication from the Ministry of Disaster Preparedness about our readiness to handle this problem.

With latrines also getting flooded, people’s health could be compromised in the process. Rwandans expect the relevant ministry to clearly explain how we can handle the situation. Other relevant institutions such as the Ministry of Health should also be prepared.
