NYABIHU - The death of a man who was hacked by his wife has shocked many residents in Nyabihu District, with some mourners saying it was a rare case of violence against men.

Sebastian Ntirubabarira, 39, of Nyamutana village, Shira sector, in Nyabihu district, was allegedly killed by Vestine Akimanampaye, 33, his spouse, on Wednesday.

Children alerted neighbours after seeing blood inside the house.

According to police, Akimanampaye hacked her husband at about 10 pm after a physical brawl.

Upon arrest Akimanampaye, confessed to killing her husband with whom they had lived for the last 15 years, and had four children.

"He has been accusing me of infidelity. He stopped me from doing any business, going to the trading centre and even church, saying that I will go for other men. I tolerated all this for years, but when he started beating me all the time...this is how I reacted,” Akimanampaye said.

Neighbours reported that there had been long standing conflicts in the family and authorities were aware of the woman’s plight though they never intervened.

"He subjected me to slavery, for the last 15 years. I reported whatever happened to me to the authorities, I regret what I did, I cut him because he was beating me,” Akimanampaye said.

The district police commander confirmed the murder and the subsequent arrest and said that Akimanampaye killed her husband accusing him of mistreatment.

The wife was taken to Mukamira Police Station.
