EASTERN PROVINCE

NYAGATARE — Police in Nyagatare are holding the former head teacher of Gakirage Primary School on allegations of harbouring and spreading the ethnic ideology among pupils.

Alphonsine Musabyyeezu, who was fired by local leaders last year on similar charges, was reportedly rearrested on the orders of Nyagatare Lower Court of Instance.

The District Police Commander, Superintendent Emanuel Kalasi confirmed the arrest, but did not give details.

This is the second time that she has been arrested over similar allegations within a period of three months. The first time was in December but circumstances under which she was released were also unclear at that time.

Court sources however say prosecution has collected enough evidence implicating Musabyeyezu in sowing seeds of Genocide ideology during her tenure as the head teacher.

Following her first suspension, the district commissioned an investigation into her conduct . The report implicated her in harbouring and promoting ethnic divisions among school children but exonerated her on financial mismanagement, another allegation which had been levelled against her.

Basing on the report however, the district advisory council sat last month and endorsed her indefinite sacking and banned her from heading any other school in the district.

Just days after her suspension, she was also accused of participating in the poisoning of an exotic cow of the Executive Secretary of Gakirage cell in Nyagatare town.
