MUHANGA-Grief engulfed residents of Kiyumba Sector, after a 9-year old child drowned in River Nyabarongo.

Eric Nsengimana, drowned as he and two other children were swimming in the river which flows through the northern part of Muhanga District.

His body is yet to be retrieved as residents help security organs in the search, local leaders said.

Eye witness said that the three children were swept by strong water currents.

"We managed to rescue two but unfortunately lost one of them,” a local resident, Jean Paul Nsabyimana, told The New Times.

Police spokesman, Theos Badege, urged parents to monitor the movement of their children especially during the heavy rainy season.

"There is irresponsibility of parents over children and this is a sad situation," Badege said.

This is the third such incident within a period of one month.

A 32-year old man, Emmanuel Shumbusho, last Saturday drowned in Kagaga stream in Cyeza sector, Muhanga district.

And last month, a group of four children drowned in Nyabarongo in Kamonyi District near Kigali City.
