Sometimes in life people end up doing things they don’t like very much. These things may be working in a job they don’t like or study subjects they don’t enjoy.

It has gotten to the point where it is the norm in our society for people to complain about the jobs they do. Somewhere along the way people end up taking up jobs they are not interested in but got stuck there even though they hated them.

Media Analyst, Christine Rwampungu, says that some people are stuck in a job they don’t like because they cannot get anything suited for their qualifications.

"A doctor might stick to their job for the prestige, but have no interest in people,” she said.

She states that people start a work history with the first job they can get and just stay in that industry forever. Most times due to the urgency associated with supporting their families and lifestyles.

Dr.  Joseph Nkurunziza, Executive Director Never Again Rwanda believes that due to lack of the specific qualifications needed, lack of initiative or no job hunting skills engages people in doing jobs they do not like at all.

"Other people may work at the wrong job because of pressure to stay in the family business or because they think a certain career is expected of them for whatever reason,” he says.

He asserts that some people get impatient and take the first job that comes along with the fear that another might not materialise.

Olivier Ntihobari, Cleaner at the Supreme Court says that he ended up doing the job because he needed financial support for his family.

"I decided to be a cleaner because I don’t have the required skills to apply for professional employment opportunities and other white collar jobs,” he adds.

Ntihobari explains that a lot of people pick jobs that aren’t necessarily to their taste because of the salary paid. For instance, "if you are struggling to make ends meet, then you might be willing to sacrifice a little bit of your happiness to support your family.”

Sometimes people have to perform assignments they don’t really adore. They must work to earn a living but if they have a clear understanding of where they want to be in two or five years time, then their jobs will become much more tolerable.
