Nkusi kicks off campaign at ULK-Gisenyi campus

Former minister Prof. Laurent Nkusi who is a senatorial candidate for private universities

KIGALI - Former cabinet minister, Prof. Laurent Nkusi, who is the sole candidate in the senatorial race to represent private institutions of higher learning, began his campaigns, yesterday, at Kigali Independent University, Gisenyi campus.

Senatorial candidates are currently busy traversing the country in search of votes ahead of the elections slated later this month.

The 61-year old academic is currently the Vice Rector of Academics at the Institute of Agriculture, Technology and Education of Kibungo (INATEK).

"If voted into the Senate, I will ensure that every citizen gets access to education,” Nkusi said.

He emphasised the need to improve research in the education sector.

Nkusi, who is married with five children, attended his primary school in Huye District, secondary school in Nyanza after which he enrolled at the National University of Rwanda (NUR), where he studied literature.

Thereafter, he went to France for higher education before returning to teach at NUR from 1976 to 2000.

Between 2000 and 2008, Nkusi held two cabinet portfolios: Lands and Information.
