Over 100 former street children in Musanze town are at Kinigi Transit Centre as they prepare to join the Iwawa Rehabilitation and Vocational Development Centre.

 According to Muhanga Mayor, Winifridah Mpembyemungu, the children were responsible for petty crimes in the town.

She added the district is working with the Ministry of Youth to rehabilitate the children into responsible citizens.

"It will be a big opportunity for these young people to transform their lives, and learn skills,” Mpembyemungu said.

The Mayor attributed the rising number of street children to domestic conflicts, especially among polygamous families, where parents don’t pay enough attention to young children.

"We encourage parents to take care of their children,” the Mayor said. 

In May this year, the first group of former street children graduated from the Iwawa centre with skills in construction, bee keeping, commercial farming, carpentry and tailoring.
