Editor,

In the recent past, Rwanda’s banking sector has dramatically changed. We have witnessed many regional banks open shop here, leading to healthy competition.

But one question begs an answer. Are we prepared to fully come to terms with the ever evolving banking system?

I find it disconcerting that I always have trouble with ATM machines. On countless occasions, I have failed to make cash withdrawals after breakdown of the ATMs.  But I also feel there is slow response from the respective banks whenever there is a breakdown.

I nearly shed tears last Sunday after failing to access my money at a local ATM machine in Kigali city, as it was ‘out of order’ for like the third day running.

The long queue inside the bank was of no consolation either. Machines at various banks in the country seem faulty all the time and I fully know that the managers responsible are well aware of the problem but choose not to address it.

It is really frustrating having to use a cheque book every time you need instant cash, considering that on most occasions, the banks are flooded with people. We need help fast!
