ONE-TIME Olympian Jackson Niyomugabo finished fifth in his maiden participation in the 800m freestyle of the swimming competition of the All Africa Games in Maputo, Mozambique.

Niyomugabo clocked nine minutes and five seconds to settle for fifth position missing in the medal bracket which was scooped by Tunisia’s Ahmed Makhloukhe who used 08: 05 and South African pair of Mark Ndadari and Jesperi Vengeri who clocked 08:10 and 08:21.

Niyomugabo goes back to the pool this afternoon in the quest for 1500m freestyle silverware.

Other swimmers set to compete today include Patrick Rukundo in the 100m freestyle and Alphonsine Agahozo in the 50m freestyle as well.

Coach Innocent Gashema said that his team is struggling with form. "We have not been able to train ever since we reached Maputo last week.

"We only use normal swimming pools because organisers never considered availing modern training pools to help the athletes in the games village,” added Gashema.
