MUHANGA- The president of the Rwanda Socialist Labour Party (PSR) has asked members to champion the family planning campaign all over the country.

MP Jean Baptiste Rucibigango, made the remarks while presiding over a PSR summer training on gender equality and development in Muhanga on Saturday.

Rucibigango said that family planning is necessary for sustainable development and the dignity of citizens.

"Family planning should be adopted in order to address the problems of family welfare and insufficient resources. We cannot sustain our livelihoods if the residents continue having more children," Rucibigango said.

The participants were briefed on the code of conduct, self dignity, members’ contribution to the party leadership and national growth.

Female participants said that family planning is perceived as a women’s responsibility which has made it a persistent problem.

They said that men too have to be involved in addressing the problem.

"Women still need the support of men in family planning. It’s very hard to undertake such initiatives without the involvement of male spouses, who are in most cases in disagreement over the number of children," Théopiste Ingabire, a PSR member, mentioned.

Similar training sessions will be held in Nyamaseke, Nyamagabe, Karongi, Rulindo, Bugesera, and Kirehe districts.
