RWANDA champion Sylvain Rukundo failed to qualify for next year’s Olympic Games after clocking 13:58:92 in the heat stages of the tight 5000m race yesterday in Daegu, South Korea.

Rukundo finished in 15th position behind Ethiopia’s Merga Imane who clocked 13:37.96 to qualify for the final event.

Rukundo was required to clock 13:28:00 to be able to realize his dream of representing Rwanda at next year’s Olympic Games but with him failing the bid, he will have to wait a little longer to find out if he will   compete at London Games.

Abela Kuma (Ethiopia), Eliud Kipchoge (Kenya) and Amanuel Mesel are other Africans who qualified for the final round after clocking 13:38:41, 13:39:02 and 13:39:97 respectively.

Rwanda has ended the world athletics championship without any landmark following Epiphanie Nyirabarame’s failure to even finish the women full marathon race last Sunday.

Nyirabarame who was expected to use the world athletics championship as a platform to seek the minimum qualifications to enable her compete at London Games never lived up to her dream of doing so as she injury her left leg after 21.095km.
