GATSIBO - Farmers in Gatsibo District have been advised to plant quality seeds and use fertilisers if they are to increase their crop production.

The call was made at a meeting for local agronomists held at the district headquarters to explore ways of improving production in the next planting season dubbed season ‘A’2012.

Participants called on farmers to prepare their gardens before October 10, for early planting.

The meeting also reviewed last season’s circumstances, mulling over the reasons why the district never registered maximum yields.

Bernard Mudaheranwa, the head of Gatsibo farmers, disclosed that last year’s harvest was poor because they never used fertilisers.

"We experienced low production last year due to a number of problems, but we have directed every resident to pay for fertilisers before the planting season begins,” he said.

Francoise Umutesi, Kiramuluzi Sector agronomist said that seeds have already been distributed to all farmers to ensure timely planting.

"What is remaining is the supply of fertilisers and residents are keen to pay on time. We have successfully supplied quality seeds to our farmers and we expect high production this season,” she said.
