Heavy rains destroy houses in Gatsibo

GATSIBO- Close to 30 houses were brought down by heavy rains and strong winds in Karambi Cell, Ngarama Sector in Gatsibo District Sunday afternoon.According to local residents, the storm blew away rooftops in numerous houses, leaving several families without shelter.

GATSIBO- Close to 30 houses were brought down by heavy rains and strong winds in Karambi Cell, Ngarama Sector in Gatsibo District Sunday afternoon.

According to local residents, the storm blew away rooftops in numerous houses, leaving several families without shelter.

"We first experienced strong winds that were followed by heavy rains. I was seated in the house with my children when the whole roof was blown off. I immediately run away to seek shelter at my neighbour’s home,” said one of the victims only identified as Mpakaniye.

Another victim, Vedaste Bizagwira, said his house was razed to the ground by the heavy downpour.

"The house was first shaken by strong winds and later destroyed. No part remained standing.”

According to local leaders, about four hectares of banana plantations were also ruined .

Five people injured during the catastrophe were rushed to Ngarama Health Centre but were later discharged.

The district’s Vice Mayor in Charge of Social Affairs, Esperance Uwimpuhwe, consoled the victims and called on their neighbours to offer them immediate support.

"You should plant many trees around your plots of land to prevent future destruction from the winds ,” she advised.

An official in charge of Special Programs in Eastern Province, Denise Umwari, promised to help the victims get new iron sheets.
