Rubavu residents have experienced daily power blackouts and a crippling water shortage over the last couple of months with Gisenyi town the most affected area.

"Water and power are rationed. We are allowed to fetch water for just a day but we don’t have it the following day and this affects our daily life and work,” laments Jean Claude Mwiseneza, a resident of in Gisenyi town.

Residents of the district have resorted to fetching water from alternative sources located several kilometres away, thouh they are yet to seek alternative power sources.

Innocent Niyigaba, a resident, appealed to the Energy, Water and Sanitation Authority (EWSA) to ensure there is constant supply of the two utilities to save people’s businesses and make life bearable.

"We have experienced the problem for a long time now and nothing has been done about it even when the authorities are aware about it,” charged Niyigaba.

Efforts to talk to the officials of EWSA were futile as several our telephone calls went unanswered.
