Unidentified gunmen attacked the residence of the United Nations peacekeepers in Haiti, fatally injuring a Rwandan police officer.

Sgt. Serge Ndagijimana Kamali, who was on the peacekeeping mission under the United Nation Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) died while undergoing treatment at a UN hospital in the neighbouring Dominican Republic following gunshots to the stomach.

The shooting incident took place on August 19, when two masked armed men broke into the residence of United Nation Police Officers (UNPOLs) in an attempted robbery.

Police Spokesperson, Theos Badege, confirmed the incident in a statement to The New Times.

"Sgt. Kamali passed away at a United Nations hospital in the Dominican Republic where he had been evacuated for treatment after being shot at his residence on Vivy Michel in Port au Prince (Western Department),” the statement reads in part.

Badege noted that Ndagijimana, 46, was first admitted at an Argentinean hospital based in Haiti where his condition stabilised before being flown to Dominican Republic for further medical attention.

He is survived by a widow and three children.

"The UNPOLs resisted and unfortunately the brave action resulted in Kamali being shot in the left upper stomach. Rwanda National Police is working together with MINUSTAH to bring Kamali’s body back home.

Rwanda National Police joins Kamali’s family and friends to mourn the loss of one of its brave Police officers” he added.

Ndagijimana was among the 184 officers on mission in Haiti. He was a member of a contingent deployed on May 30.

Rwanda has 413 police officers on mission in Sudan, Southern Sudan, Liberia and Haiti.
