KIGALI -The National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda (NISR) is set to recruit a staff of 16,000 to carry out the national census slated for August next year.

In an interview with The New Times yesterday, the Acting Director General of NISR, Diane Karusisi, said that the recruitment process will begin in February next year.

"Carrying out a national census is a huge project which needs a lot of staff; so it’s in this regard that NISR, in partnership with the local leaders, is planning to recruit at least 16,000 Rwandans in order to easily execute this exercise,” she said.

Karusisi added that those who will be recruited must, at least, have completed secondary school.

She said that after the recruitment exercise, those selected would be trained how to use questionnaires and maps which would be paramount during the national census.

Karusisi noted that her institution would design directives which will help the local leaders to recruit effectively and efficiently.

The national census will cost US$21.3 million (over Rwf12.8 billion) and according to the Census Project Coordinator, Prosper Mutijima, 70 percent of the total budget for the exercise would be footed by the government.
