Atraco’s lead at the top of the national league table standing was reduced to just a single point after a frustrating goalless against Police on Saturday.

On an afternoon when two games involving the top two sides were played at the same ground, it was a day for highs and lows in Rwandan club football.

Minutes after watching APR set a record of scoring the highest number of goals in a local league, 13-0 against Military, Police proved why the title race is nowhere near a straight-forwards affair by denying Atraco maximum points. Jabir Mutarambirwa scored five; Elias Uzamukunda scored four goals, Mbuyu Twite, Kabange Twite, Hegman Ngoma and Sadou Boubakary were also on the score sheet against a hapless Military who didn’t look a team that deserve to play in this league.

The win took the champions to 30 points, one adrift of leaders Atraco after 12 rounds of marches. Caretaker coach, Jean David Katotola was full of praise for his youthful side that showed no signed of bad effect that could have been expected following the sacking of head coach Andy Mfutila last week.In the second game, Jean Marie Ntagwabira’s side was held to a frustrating scoreless draw by a resilient Police side.

The draw though, left Atraco still at the top with 31 points while Police remain on eighth position with 11 points, four behind AS-Kigali in seventh.

Elsewhere, Rwanda’s representative in the Caf Confederation Cup, Rayon Sport came from behind to defeat Electrogaz 3-2 at Camp Kigali. Mike Yossam, Jean Lomami and Pizzolera Cyril scored the goals for the Blues while Said Mugisha and Hamisi Bagumaho were on target for much-improved Electrogaz.

In Gisenyi, Kiyovu recorded a 2-1 victory against Marines to take their points’ tally to 25 and remain third on the league table.
